Testing and Troubleshooting

Fiber Networks

1. Fiber Testing and Characterization

Fiber Testing services include: CD, PMD and AP tests.

The tests are given after studying the behavior of the chromatic dispersion and justifying the compensator to meet the +/- dispersion. Within the CD test, the operator will also get a report on the Polarization Mode Dispersion and Attenuation Profile.

The advanced fiber characterization service we offer enables organizations to successfully upgrade their fiber optic networks to 10G, while having confidence in both the integrity and performance of the fiber infrastructure.

2. Reflection and OTDR Testing and Profile Documentation

OTDR testing methods have become crucial for building, certifying, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic systems.

They show the quality of installation such as splicing, termination and pending issues.

They also monitor the network and test new fiber drams

Along with OTDR testing we deliver an OTDR Profile for each link (A-B) Report

3. Attenuation Testing & budget Calculation

Attenuation (the loss of communication signal) occurs on computer networks because of:

  • Range – over longer distances both wired and wireless transmissions gradually dissipate in strength
  • Interference – radio interference or physical obstructions, such as walls, dampen communication signals on wireless networks
  • Wire size – thinner wires suffer from more attenuation than thicker wires on wired networks

Our services verify total attenuation of a fiber before and after installing any hardware.

Testing the attenuation before installing DWDM ensures minimum dynamic range.

We test the attenuation for the whole band to ensure they are to the ITU standards.

4. DWDM Testing

DWDM increases the bandwidth of an optical fiber by multiplexing several wavelengths (or colors) onto it. Even though it costs more than CWDM, it is currently the most popular WDM technology because it offers the most capacity.

DWDM networks must be tested for lossconnector cleanlinessspectral quality and dispersion

DWDM testing can be performed before putting life traffic at installation and acceptance stage. It can also be performed at operation and maintenance stages.

FocusTel offers all the right tools to ensure smooth DWDM operation, including inspection probes, OTDRs, power meters, dispersion testers and optical spectrum analyzers.

5. Fiber Inspection and Cleaning

A 1-micrometer dust particle on a single-mode core can block up to 1% of the light (a 0.05dB loss). The only way to know it’s clean is to inspect it before you connect it.

A 9-micrometer speck is still too small to see without a microscope, but it can completely block the fiber core. These contaminants can be more difficult to remove than dust particles

Clean fiber optic components are a requirement for quality connections between fiber optic equipment.

The most basic and important procedures for the maintenance of fiber optic systems is to clean the fiber optic equipment.

It’s crucial to always inspect and clean the connectors of end fibers.

Transport Networks Testing

1. Metro Ethernet Networks
  • Operators need to verify and test end-to-end services.
  • Small ISPs need to utilize their networking by ensuring capacity utilization and optimization.

Our services help operators and ISPs to reach their highest performance. We offer the following test scenarios:

  • Ethernet/IP Layer 1 to 4
  • VLAN Testing
  • Performance Characteristics   RFC2544
  • Ethernet Service Activation Y.1564.
  • TCP layer testing RFC6349

Access Networks

1. xDSL/FTTx

The following tests are offered to operators that are always pursuing the best connectivity and reliability of access network:

  • xDSL Testing and Copper Qualifications
  • FTTx: Physical Layer using OTDR, PON meter and Optical Laser Source
  • Application Testing VOIP and IPTV

We help operators set up a complete operation and maintenance plan.

We also prepare test procedures for activation and acceptance services.

Synchronization Testing

Synchronization testing applies to network synchronization, a critical element of network performance.

The tests cover traditional synchronization protocols as well as precision time protocol (IEEE 1588v2), which synchronizes clocks throughout a computer network, and Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE).

Synchronization testing is required throughout the network lifecycle, from turn-up and burn-in to monitoring to troubleshooting.
